Global Semiconductor Industry Updates

1. Gartner predicts that global spending on generative AI (GenAI) will reach $644 billion in 2025, an increase of 76.4% compared to 2024.

2. GlobalFoundries, the world’s fifth-largest semiconductor foundry, is considering merging with UMC to become the world’s second-largest foundry.

3. Starting from April 5, a minimum 10% tariff will be imposed on all goods exported to the United States, with China facing a 34% tariff.

4. According to a new survey by Fuji Economic, the global semiconductor materials market is expected to reach $58.6 billion by 2027, a significant increase from $46.5 billion in 2023.

China Semiconductor Industry Updates

1. With China’s push in AI, 5G, electric vehicles, and renewable energy, the demand for advanced semiconductor materials and solutions in the Chinese market is higher than ever before.

2. The Fudan team has successfully developed the world’s first 32-bit RISC-V architecture microprocessor based on two-dimensional semiconductor materials, named "Wuji" (无极).

3. The 2025 China Semiconductor Packaging and Testing Conference will be held on April 16 at the Taihu International Expo Center in Wuxi, Jiangsu.

4. The $3 billion global autonomous driving headquarters project of Xinqing Technology has been signed and will be located in Jiangbei New District, Nanjing.

5. UMC held the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of its new factory in Singapore. The first phase of production is expected to begin in 2026, which will increase the total capacity of UMC’s Singapore Fab 12i to over 1 million 12-inch wafers per year.
