release time:2024-09-03Author source:SlkorBrowse:1653

On July 31, Micron Technology, Inc. announced that its SSD products using the ninth-generation (G9) TLC NAND technology have begun shipping, making it one of the first companies in the industry to achieve this milestone. Micron's G9 NAND technology boasts data transfer rates of up to 3.6 GB/s, providing exceptional data read/write bandwidth. This new NAND technology offers outstanding performance for artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-intensive applications, suitable for personal devices, edge servers, enterprise, and cloud data centers. [According to the Forward Insights "Q1 SSD Supplier Report," as of May 2024, the top suppliers in the enterprise SSD market who hold at least a 10% market revenue share are currently producing client-value SSDs, excluding gaming consoles.]

Scott DeBoer, Executive Vice President of Technology and Products at Micron, stated: “The mass production of Micron’s G9 NAND technology showcases our strength in process technology and design innovation. The G9 NAND technology offers market-leading density, resulting in more compact and efficient storage solutions that bring significant benefits to consumers and enterprises.”

Micron's G9 NAND technology, with its superior NAND input/output (I/O) rates, meets the high throughput demands of data-intensive workloads, offering data transfer speeds that are 50% faster than current NAND technologies in SSDs. [“Market” refers to NAND products that have achieved mass production (with a monthly production volume exceeding 10,000 units) and are publicly sold and promoted in existing SSD products.] Additionally, compared to existing NAND solutions on the market, Micron's G9 NAND provides a 99% increase in chip write bandwidth and an 88% increase in read bandwidth. [The bandwidth comparison is based on different competitive products available in the market.] These advantages collectively enhance the performance and energy efficiency of SSDs and embedded NAND solutions.

Similar to previous-generation NAND products, Micron's G9 NAND features a compact 11.5mm x 13.5mm package, saving 28% more space compared to similar products, making it an outstanding small-size, high-density NAND. [“High-density” refers to 1Tb 3D TLC NAND.] This allows for higher density within a smaller footprint, maximizing design options for various use cases.

Sumit Sadana, Micron's Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer, stated: “Micron has once again led the industry into the third generation of innovative, cutting-edge NAND technology. Products integrated with Micron’s G9 NAND will offer significant performance advantages, and this technology will serve as a foundation for storage innovation, delivering value to customers across all end markets.”

Micron's 2650 NVMe SSD, featuring the advanced G9 TLC NAND technology, excels in PCMark® 10 tests, delivering a top-notch user experience in everyday computing. [SSD comparisons are based on Forward Insights' Q1 SSD Supplier Report, as of May 2024, excluding gaming consoles, focusing on the top five high-performance SSD vendors by revenue. Testing was conducted in Micron’s labs.]

Prasad Alluri, Micron's VP and General Manager of Client Storage, noted: “The Micron 2650 SSD, with our new G9 NAND technology, approaches PCIe 4.0 performance levels and pushes the limits of high-value TLC client SSDs. Its impressive PCMark 10 scores will redefine user experiences for such SSDs.”
IDC’s VP of SSD and Storage Technologies, Jeff Janukowicz, added: “Advances in AI are increasing data generation, driving the need for improved storage performance. SSDs like the Micron 2650, incorporating the latest NAND technology, will be essential for users ranging from enterprises to individual consumers.”
