In Jiujiang, the essence of the New Year begins with the first snowflake drifting down Mount Lushan. My home lies just a kilometer away from the mountain. In the past, I could look up and watch the lush green forests gradually blanketed by gentle snow. Each time, I knew the New Year was approaching.

This year is different. As my first year working after graduation, I could only witness Lushan’s first snow through social media. Though separated by screens, the images of snow-capped Lushan still stirred my nostalgia for the New Year at home.

The streets are alive with festive energy. Sidewalks are lined with stalls selling holiday essentials. Fruit vendors, perched in their modified Wuling Honggu vans, deftly weigh fruits for passersby. Plump tangerines burst with sweetness; crimson Fuji apples glisten, crisp and juicy; fragrant oranges tempt with their thin peels. Along the roads, benches arranged in squares display fireworks, handwritten couplets, and red lanterns. Despite the abundance, everything is orderly, creating a vibrant yet harmonious scene of celebration.

On New Year’s Day, temples on Lushan are filled with incense smoke. At Donglin Temple, the morning bell resonates through ancient walls, as if dispelling misfortune and purifying the world. Devotees in plain clothes pray solemnly, seeking blessings for family, society, and the sacred land. Monks offer New Year’s blessings, their serene faces radiating compassion. Here, faith and festivity intertwine, blending tradition with renewal.

The New Year’s flavor also lies in food. In my hometown, families cook a duck-like poultry called “tun”—smaller than a goose, tender and braised in soy sauce. The dish is prepared by stir-frying chunks until golden, then simmering with spices, soy sauce, and rice wine. As the aroma fills the kitchen, anticipation builds. When served, the glistening, succulent tun embodies the warmth of home and the taste of reunion.

Now working away from home, I may miss the snowscapes of Lushan, but the essence of the New Year remains etched in my memory. Across distances, the nostalgia and festive spirit warm my heart. May my hometown’s beauty endure, and may life flourish like the vibrant New Year, glowing brighter with each passing year.
