Original article by Song Shiqiang on Huaqiangbei: "The Past, Present, and Future of Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen"

Mr. Song Shiqiang, General Manager of Kinghelm (www.kinghelm.net) and SLKOR Micro (www.slkormicro.com), analyzed that first and foremost, Huaqiangbei is a land of wealth with abundant resources. Huaqiangbei, located in the Futian District of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, is commonly known as the Huaqiangbei Street. It serves as a showcase of the achievements of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone's reform and opening-up policies and is recognized as one of China's two major centers for the electronic information industry, alongside Beijing's Zhongguancun.

What leaves a deep and lasting impression on people about Huaqiangbei is the abundance of millionaires and billionaires. Huaqiangbei covers a core area of approximately 1.45 square kilometers and has been designated as the "China's No.1 Electronics Street" by the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce. It is a hardware distribution center for electronic components and information products, hosting over 50 specialized markets. The Huaqiangbei commercial district serves the surrounding communities and the people of Shenzhen, featuring prominent shopping malls such as Century Union, Junshang Department Store, Maoye Department Store, and Jiufang.

Most notably, Huaqiangbei is home to over 60,000 enterprises (including about 600 large-scale enterprises) and has over 400,000 individual businesses, employing nearly 500,000 people. The key characteristic of Huaqiangbei is the abundance of small but highly energetic companies. The annual transaction volume in Huaqiangbei reaches approximately 200 billion RMB, and its core area generates a GDP of over 100 billion RMB per square kilometer. The physical businesses in Huaqiangbei surpass many financial districts, rivaling the famous Yuehai Street and outperforming developed commercial streets in cities such as Singapore's Orchard Road, Hong Kong's Causeway Bay, and the United States' Fifth Avenue in terms of economic output per unit area.

Huaqiangbei has created numerous commercial miracles. The "One-meter Counter of Huaqiangbei" has produced over 60 billionaires. Wanjia Department Store boasts the highest sales per square meter in the global retail industry, with a daily turnover of up to 3 million yuan in its 3,000 square meter supermarket. During its heyday, Huaqiangbei attracted over 800,000 visitors daily. A 9-square-meter shop in the old Huaqiang Electronics Market required a staggering 300,000 yuan just for tea expenses. In 2005, street-facing shops on the ground floor of SEG Plaza were sold for as high as 300,000 yuan per square meter. China's richest person, Ma Huateng, with a personal fortune of around 400 billion yuan, and his company Tencent, initially operated in SEG Science and Technology Park, and they flourished in Huaqiangbei!
