The relationship and distinctions between integrated circuits and chips

release time:2024-06-28Author source:SlkorBrowse:4611

What is an integrated circuit?

An integrated circuit (IC) is a type of miniature electronic device or component. Through specific manufacturing processes, it integrates the necessary components of a circuit such as transistors, resistors, capacitors, and inductors, along with wiring connections, onto one or a few small semiconductor chips or substrate layers. These components are then encapsulated within a casing, forming a microstructure that functions as the desired circuit. This integration of components forms a cohesive unit that advances electronic devices towards miniaturization, low power consumption, intelligence, and high reliability. Integrated circuits are commonly abbreviated as "IC" in circuitry.

The inventors of the integrated circuit were Jack Kilby (for the germanium-based IC) and Robert Noyce (for the silicon-based IC). Today, most applications in the semiconductor industry use silicon-based integrated circuits.

Integrated circuits emerged as a new type of semiconductor device developed from the late 1950s to the 1960s. They are manufactured using semiconductor fabrication processes such as oxidation, photolithography, diffusion, epitaxy, and aluminum deposition. These processes integrate all the necessary components of a functional circuit—semiconductors, resistors, capacitors, and interconnecting wires—onto a small silicon wafer. The assembled components are then encapsulated and soldered within a casing, forming an electronic device. Integrated circuits are packaged in various forms, such as cylindrical, flat, or dual in-line packages.

Integrated circuit technology encompasses both chip manufacturing and design techniques, focusing on equipment, fabrication processes, packaging testing, mass production, and innovative design capabilities.

What's a chip?

A chip, also known as a microcircuit, microchip, or integrated circuit (IC), refers to a silicon wafer containing integrated circuits. These chips are very small in size and are often integral components of computers or other electronic devices.

A chip (or semiconductor chip) is a general term for semiconductor device products, serving as the substrate for integrated circuits (ICs) that are divided from a silicon wafer. A silicon wafer is a small piece of silicon containing integrated circuits, and it forms a part of computers or other electronic devices.

What is the difference between a chip and an integrated circuit?

A chip is simply that—a chip. Generally, it refers to those visible to the naked eye, covered with many small pins or without visible pins but distinctly square in shape. However, chips also encompass various types, such as baseband chips, voltage conversion chips, and so on.

Processors emphasize functionality, referring to the unit that executes processing tasks, like MCUs or CPUs.

Integrated circuits encompass a much wider range. Combining resistors, capacitors, diodes, and other components together constitutes an integrated circuit. It could be a chip for analog signal conversion or logic control. Overall, this concept leans towards underlying electronic components and integration.

An integrated circuit (IC) refers to a closely interconnected electronic circuit made up of active devices, passive components, and their interconnections, fabricated on a semiconductor substrate or an insulating substrate. It encompasses semiconductor integrated circuits, film integrated circuits, and hybrid integrated circuits as its three main branches.

A chip is the general term for semiconductor device products, serving as the carrier for integrated circuits (ICs), which are divided from a silicon wafer.

What is the connection between chips and integrated circuits?

A chip is a shorthand for integrated circuit (IC). Strictly speaking, the term "chip" refers to a small semiconductor chip inside the packaging of an integrated circuit, which is also known as the die. Therefore, "chip" and "integrated circuit" are not interchangeable terms. Integrated circuits are manufactured using semiconductor technology, thin-film technology, and thick-film technology. Any circuit that is miniaturized with specific functionality and packaged into a certain form can be referred to as an integrated circuit.
